“Roukansou”, former residence of Nobutsuna Sasaki

It is a former residence of a Japanese literature scholar Nobutsuna Sasaki who made superior achievements of “Manyoshu tanka collection”.
He spent his later years in Atami with warm climate setting up the residence since 1944 for his rehab after he suffered sickness.
It’s not allowed for people to enter inside, however the garden where there are many trees and plants was designed associated with his work, and the explanation boards of the songs are located.
Nobutsuna Sasaki was born in Mie Pref in 1872, entered the Tokyo Imperial University majored in classical literature and graduated in age of 17. He played an important role in the field of Japanese literature and as a poet.
For his medical treatment and writing, he moved to the villa of his acquaintance in Nishiyamacho of Atami in 1944 and spent his time here until his death in 1963.
As a scholar he worked as a teacher at Tokyo Imperial University and left many books such as “variorum Manyoshu tanka collection” and “history of Japanese study of tanka poetry”, also presented with the first Order of Culture. In addition, he left many achievements for studies of Manyoshu tanka collection as a poet, and wrote his songbooks “Omoigusa” “new moon” “mountain and water” etc.
On the nameplate beside the entrance gate one of his poem from his virgin songbook is inscribed.
“Negawakuha Ware harukaze ni MiwonashiteUreiaruhitono Monwotohahaya” (wish I could turn myself into a spring wind and visit the gate of someone with sorrow)
