Shiyakusho Sakura Dōri (the streets around Sagamihara City Hall) open a festival every year.The festival name is “Sagamihara Shimin Sakura Matsuri” (Sakura Festival of Sagamihara Citizen) and usually held at Saturday and Sunday on early April when its the time for cherry-blossom for blooming.
Every year they usually make the event, but for this year its a bit different. In 2015 the local election that is done every 4 years is being held, so instead of cherry-blossom festival we will have the “Green Leaves Festival”.

The days for Green Leaves festival :
・May 9, 2015 from 1 p.m. until 5p.m.
・May 10, 2015 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Usually when the city celebrate cherry-blossom festival, we will have about 300 tree of sakura blooming beautifully. Also, there will be tourist attraction like parade from the citizen, drawing contest, food stores, and many other things to enjoy.

I went there at March 30, 2015 when the sakura is really near its full-bloom state. We may not have the festival right now, but we can wait until the early May to enjoy fresh leaves that start to appear after the sakura petals raining down. Nevertheless, there still will be a light up on the street for us to enjoy yozakura (night ceherry-blossom). For you who still want to do hanami (cherry-blossom viewing) or can’t wait any longer for the festival, you are welcome to enjoy the elegant beauty of sakura. The sakura light up will be there from the end of March until early April. However, it will be on only for a limited time. Make sure to check the schedule before you go for your hanami.
