It is thought that it is about the mid-15th century when Omori went into Odawara district that Odawara-jo Castle was built for the first time. It was gradually maintained expansion as center base of Kanto rule after becoming castle of war-torn country daimyo Odawara Hojo in about 1500 and scale of castle was greatest and reached when we completed contour which surrounded Shiroshita for the next attack of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and developed in castle in the Japan’s biggest Middle Ages.
Odawara-jo Castle became place that Ieyasu Tokugawa ruled over when we greeted the Edo era and invited vassal Okubo as the lord of a castle, and scale of castle was reduced within outermost outworks. Large-scale repair work was begun after Inaba became the lord of a castle and was reborn as castle in the early modern times. Okubo became the lord of a castle again and carried important role afterwards as castle of hereditary daimyo who supported shogunate government again as strategic point of Kanto district defense that had Hakone until the late Tokugawa period.
However, Odawara-jo Castle became abandoned castle in 1870, and most buildings were dismantled, and left stone wall has all collapsed by the Great Kanto Earthquake of (1923) in 1923.
As for current Odawara-jo Castle trace, most of main enclosure, the outworks of a castle and a part of the contour are appointed on historic spot of country. In addition, we were maintained as “ruins of a castle park” around main enclosure, and the castle tower revived in (1960) in 1960 followed by the Maidashi gate was restored the copper gate in (1997) the Tokiwagi gate in (1971) in 2009 in 1997 in 1971 by (2009). Furthermore, we have Odawara-jo Castle trace which is precious cultural inheritance get closer in Odawara-shi and wrestle for full-scale historic spot maintenance for the purpose of telling in history for a long time.
In October, 2006, Odawara Castle was chosen as one of “100 selections of Japanese Historical Parks”.
