Ayame-gozen (The Lady Iris) entered the palace from here, it was reputed that she was the most beautiful woman within the palace, and became the wife of Minamoto no Yorimasa who was at the most prominent rank of the Genji Tribe at that time.
Minamoto no Yorimasa was best known for his achievement of defeating the Nue, an imaginary monster of Japanese folktales, however he was defeated to death by the Hei Tribe during the war between the two tribes.
After the death of Yorimasa, Ayame Gozen went back to Kona of Izu and lived there as a nun for the rest of her life. This festival is dedicated for remembering Ayame Gozen.
