Tadashi Inaba from Okawa Onsen Tourist Association
It has been more than 30 years since the first Firefly even took place at the Takegasawa Park..
I am really glad to see that with the help from the county government and the courtesy of the land owner, Mr. Kimura, the beautiful pond of Takegasawa park, which I have been familiar with since my childhood, has become a famous spot for firefly watching and culturing. The pond was chosen as the “Top 100 waterside of the Shizuoka Prefecture”. However, the culturing of fireflies requires enormous time and labors, now several members of the Tourist Association are taking care of them on a switch-once-a-week base, responsible for doing everyday watering and cultivating. The whole year hard works of management and energy pouring are all dedicate for the Firefly event hold at every June.
A firefly spent 9 month in the water during it’s larva time, eat a lot of Semisulcospira libertina for living. Do you know that when a firefly become a imago, it will stop eating any thing. The students from local elementary school discharge about more than 5,000 larvae of firefly at March each year. Of course I think there are also lot of wild naturally born fireflies living in the river.
The most amazing attraction of the Firefly show at the Takegasawa park is that you can see the glittering lights all reflecting on the face of the water. I, myself am fascinated by this really beautiful scene.
