Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival 2015
2015/03/05
I heard that in February, the poem came.
There are many beautiful verses used to describe February.
This February, we enjoyed followers, went walking in the countryside, had a wonderful vacation time in Japan.
In Japan, cherry usually blossoms in March or April, the flowering period is very short only last for one to two weeks.
Clever Japanese people made some breed improvements to cherry trees, in some parts of Izu area, cherries start to blossom as early as February. The flowering period had also been extended to about one month.
This year, I viewed cherry blossoms first at the riverbank of Itokawa River, there were so many cherries in full blossom alongside the river. However the cherry blossom I saw in Kawazu area was the biggest scale of cherry blossom I had ever seen.
As early as a month ago, I had already seen many posters of Kawazu cherry blossom in Kozu Station which shows pink cherry blossoms like clouds extended alongside the river without an end.
The scene in the poster was amazingly beautiful that I even thought it was an over modified one of the original picture.
The weather was not so good and there had been many rains during the week. The forecast shows that the rain stops on Wednesday, so I decided to visit the cherry blossom site immediately.
Kawazu is a long distance from where I live, there is a long ride on the train to reach the site which made me fell asleep.
It felt like every passenger in the train is bound for Kawazu for flower viewing. There is an old lady in the train who looked so energetic. We chatted for a while, I learned the old lady is in her eighties, she had visited Yugawara to enjoy hot spring with her friends several days ago, and today she is also going to visit the cherry blossom in Kawazu. I was so moved by her high spirit and energy, I just couldn’t image what I will become when I am in my eighties. It must be very bad when I become an old woman, I must be very lazy that time, even won’t leave the house.
After leaving Kawazu Station, I past a traffic light and entered a pedestrian walkway. One side of the road was filled with cherry trees in full blossom, other side of the road was occupied by many vendors selling various goods.
I walked along the road recommended on the map of my travel guide. After reached the main road, I saw endless pink cherry trees scattered alongside the river.
Although it was a weekday, the place was packed with tourists that made me recognized how famous this festival is.
In some sections of the road, there spreads paddies of rape-flowers and cauliflowers in bright yellow under the cherry trees together forming a pink and yellow scene.
There are many vendors alongside the road selling specialty snacks. I bought a box of cherry rice dumpling, it smelt cherry flowers but the taste is average.
Shopping for a long time, faster and more time to stall sites of a golden eye snapper food component is relatively small, but it tastes pretty good. In particular local mushroom miso soup is very delicious.
Cherry blossom is so beautiful whether viewed in close up or from a distance.
My vocabulary was too scarce to describe Kawazu cherry blossom’s beauty.
Similar to Cherries in Atami, Cherries in Kawazu also looked mysterious to me. However Kawazu has a longer, wider River, have more cherry blossom trees. Tall trees is covered with cherry blossoms, breeze in the Sun.
I walked to the upstream of the river, there were fewer people, the river was getting broader and trees become more thriving.
When I get there, I witnessed the station poster images,it is without any exaggeration, as long as the weather couldn’t have been better, the sky turns blue I can get some posters.
I walked all day while carrying my cameras so I felt tired after went home. But there are two things particularly pleased me.
First, of course, is to see the beauty of the kawazu cherry tree.
Other is that several Japanese and speak to me, never asked where I came from, seems that the recognize me as Japanese.
Is this a sign that my Japanese improved? Maybe a little!
