Soushisha (House of Shouyou Tsubouchi)
2014/02/13
It is the house where the famous writer in Meiji period names “Shoyo Tsubochi” spent 15 years from 1920 to 1935 till he died, he is famous as the first translator of Shakespeare.
On an anniversary of his death of February 28 every year a memorial festival is held at Kiun-kaku Villa.
Shouyou Tsubouchi lived in Arashuku (current Chuou-cho) for nine years, and have done translation of the Shakespeare plays and his original plays such as “Nagori no Hoshi Tsukiyo” “Yoshitoki no saigo”.
Meanwhile, he donated approximately 3,000 books of his collection to town in 14 Taisho (1915) and town founded a library based on these collection and later became an Atami public library.
Since a quiet Arashuku area gradually became noisy and Shoyo couldn’t able to devote himself to writing he built a house in Minaguchicho newly and moved there in May 1920. The new house and the garden too was all designed by Shoyo himself.
The reason why the building came to be called “Soushisha” is because of the two persimmon trees of 300 year old there, and Yaichi Aizu, the friend of Shoyo named it.
There are unique facilities inside, a library or monument of the shape of tower, and the framed tablet on the gate with the Yaichi Aizu’s writing is also special too.
