Spring Mountain Burning at Mt. Omuroyama
2016/02/09
It is a tradition continued for more than 700 years!
Start at noon on Sunday, February 14th
Mt. Omuroyama is covered with pampas grass in winter. Every spring, the grass on the mountain will be burned out by a control burning last for 30 minutes.
It was a tradition maintained by local farmers in the past in order to give more nutrients to the soil making it easy to grow pampas grass in the new year. Today, thanks to this annually repeated custom, Mt. Omuroyama is covered completely with pampas grass forming a fluffy grassy landscape. It is a symbol of traditional Japanese countryside.
